The collective sorrow of 2020, Q1 is truly palpable across the media pages and the miles of our lives.

If you and your team are feeling the impacts of uncertainty for today and the unknowns for the future, it’s okay!

The experience with the COVID-19 pandemic is a for-real individual and collective loss experience. While the journey of loss and coping with all of the impacts is personal (and different for each person), the impacts are certainly experienced within the team setting and organization, as well.

While there are many aspects of our COVID-19 journey that are not controllable, oh my friend, there are some actions we CAN take that are fully within our control. Here are a few suggestions:

  • Acknowledge your sorrow about the swift changes in the world (and in your life) that have impacted life as we all have known it, However, don’t set up a tent around the sorrows – to camp out there forevermore.
  • Talk to a trusted someone. Share your thoughts and feelings. Say what you are thinking. Get it out.
  • Create a simple gratitude list each day. This practice is powerful to our thoughts, feelings, and self-will to want to fix things that we cannot control.
  • Be kind and gentle with yourself. Practice self-care several times each day. You matter for your future in Growing Forward strong.
  • Choose to develop a “New You” life and business strategy that includes specific actions you CAN take each day to achieve some ‘green check marks’ of accomplishment.
  • Develop at least 2-3 outcomes you’d like in your life and in your business in the next 90 days. Use these outcomes to propel you forward each day in your purpose-filled actions.
  • Set a daily schedule for your workdays and do the activities. Our humanness thrives in structure. And, you will more likely achieve your green check marks if you set a schedule.

When you have done all you know to do and you can do, rest.

Rest in the truth that “this, too, shall pass!”

The quarantine will ease up and shift into a new normal of activities and living. People will begin to work and learn and live productively again. We will each experience the amazement of a new normal, most probably much like Post-9/11 days.

And we each adapted and learned to thrive in our own Post 9/11 life. So, too, shall we each build on those victories and successes to rise up in Post C-Virus living and loving and laughter.

We will find a way, individually and collectively – because we CAN!

Think on These Things

Oh, the power of the human mind to self-direct its path in life!

When we read on the subject of the human mind, we can readily learn that our thought lives offer each of us so much power.

Oh, to be effective in managing the vast array of thoughts that march through the fearfully and wonderfully created mind.

Beyond the technicalities of the mind and thoughts, one consistent truth remains:

Our thoughts are the springboard of influence upon our behavior and attitude. And, from these two spaces of our lives come forth our actions and reactions.

For better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and health, until death do us part – we each get to govern the outcomes of our lives through the management of our thoughts. That, my friend, is a powerful relationship and responsibility.

It is also the core principle behind the truth that while our lives may have been victimized by the actions or reactions of others; even so, we are NOT victims forever because of the power of our choice in thoughts. When we take authority over our thoughts and responsibility for our own healing, we really can achieve and conquer.

An Ancient Truth Principle

There is an ancient principle of life truth that is a goldmine of guidance for whatsoever things are most profitable to think about. Here’s a peek into the goldmine:

1. True Things – anything that is peaceable in any way and moving together in unity with all that nature, itself, teaches us. Observation is a beautiful activity because it leads to understanding and wisdom. Oh, the power of the human mind to self-direct its path in life!
2. Honest Things – all that is truth-filled, sincere, ethical, principled, and authentic; bringing honor and love to self and others. Oh, the power of the human mind to self-direct its path in life!
3. Just Things – any action and effort toward doing and being fair and acting pure-hearted with any authority or power granted to us; having the best interests of others at heart in our behavior. Oh, the power of the human mind to self-direct its path in life!
4. Pure Things – considering all that is simply innocent, refreshing, ethical, moral, and of honorable intentions toward self-worth and unselfish love of others. Oh, the power of the human mind to self-direct its path in life!
5. Lovely Things – anything that reflects delightful, pleasant, uplifting gestures toward self and encouraging of others in their life purpose and efforts. Oh, the power of the human mind to self-direct its path in life!
6. Of a Good Report – all words, actions, and creations that are blended in the unifying power of good news for the enjoyment of and building up of others; coming forth from the position of principle-based truths and without the misuse of power or the intention of control; those things that are simply worthy of praise and thankfulness. Oh, the power of the human mind to self-direct its path in life!

Principle Truths are Undefeated

Whether we are aware of them, or not, principle truths are undefeated.

Consider the two-year-old and the principle of gravity. Whether he comprehends the power of the principle truth of gravity, or not, the entirety of gravity’s impact bears forth its truthfulness when the two-year-old super-power character crawls upon the table and leaps into the air. Most of the time, wailing follows the leap into gravity’s realm.

So, too, is it with human characters in the game of life.

Whether we honor or are even aware of life principles of truth – they still hold true in the impacts upon our lives, for better or for worse, for richer or for poorer, in sickness and in health, until death do us part with the power of our thoughts.

One of the most richly worded, oldest versions, and beautifully undefeated life principles of truth is stated in the Middle English dialogue – and it refers to the most beneficial ‘things’ to think upon. It goes like this:

Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.” 1

Wrapping Up This Thought

Summing it all up, friends, I’d say you’ll do best by filling your minds and meditating on things true, noble, reputable, authentic, compelling, gracious—the best, not the worst; the beautiful, not the ugly; things to praise, not things to curse. Put into practice what you learned, what you heard and saw and realized. Do that, and God, who makes everything work together, will work you into his most excellent harmonies. 2

Oh, the power of the human mind to self-direct its path in life! For truly, we are not powerless. We each have the explicit power to govern our lives through governing our thoughts – on purpose.

Addiction (A Brain Disorder) Interferes with Performance & Purpose Fulfillment

Frustration: A Powerful Tool for Change

It’s generally true with most Life Changes that there are some super-charged frustrating challenges involved.

After all, if change were easy everyone would do it, right?

And frustrations are very likely to appear in different forms. Some are just agitating; others are maddening; while a few really do behave as giant bolders blocking all entrances to peace!

Here’s another truth: it’s downright frustrating when we think of the challenges that seem to literally keep us stuck! Even when we decide to make the Life Changes needed, there are the challenges of financial limitations, relationship issues, and various commitments that SEEM to keep us stuck.

Hey, I promise that it is NOT those exact things that keep us stuck.

Rather, it is what goes on between our ears ABOUT those things – that is what ultimately holds us hostage to the failing familiar.

Altogether, there are a lot of strong will and stuck mindsets that work to keep us in the stuck places.

For most of us, leaving the familiar is a fearful thing (even when we know that the familiar is failing to fulfill our life purpose and dreams).

But, really, in spite of all of the adult realities of life: ALL change begins with the first step. And sometimes that first step must occur between our ears.

Digging Out of the Failing Familiar Places

Remember, the first step may not even look like it goes in the direction of chasing our dreams. That’s okay.

It could be that the first step involves digging out of the failing familiar place of old comfort zones.

You know, those places where we are so familiar with people, tasks, interactions, and outcomes that we live on auto-pilot with no mental challenges required.

All the while, we are miserable on the inside. Focusing on “the getting started place” is the Solution direction!

Rest Within a Plan

It really helps to confidently take the second and third and every other step if we create a plan. I like to call this little plan, “My Life Change plan.”

But, this neat little title doesn’t mean that the plan is all typed out and fancy. It could be some bullet-points on a sticky note. Nevertheless, it guides our thoughts and actions. And, it serves as encouragement when we get discouraged along the way.

And, did you know that it is a Life Principle of Truth that there is rest within a plan.

Yes, there is. Let’s talk about that another time.

Comfort Zones and the Failing Familiar Places are Dream Killers

Doing things scared and chasing adventures are just a few of the ways we make our dreams come to life.

It’s kind of like heading out on our first overseas trip. It’s exhilarating getting ready for the adventures and experiences. But at the same time, it is a little scary during the packing and preparing time. Not scary like shaking in our shoes; rather, scary like not knowing all that we don’t know about what to expect. Right?

Isn’t it kind of like that when we begin chasing adventures and pursuing our life purpose? But, it’s so worth it!

It’s worth it because bringing dreams to life usually lands us right in the big, fat middle of our Life Purposes!

At the same time, there are usually simultaneous feelings of being scared and feeling excitement. It’s okay. Such is real life for most people who will be honest about it all!

Getting from Here to There

But how do we get there (to living our dreams) from where we are now? Yes, I know! I’ve asked this question more than once in my lifetime!

I’ve lived through seasons of very little and through seasons of plenty. I’ve experienced “having it all” and I’ve experienced “losing it all.” So, I know how to begin again; how to rebuild; how to take that first step to needed life changes.

This is what I have learned about both places: it is never too late or too difficult or too scary to BEGIN AGAIN in chasing dreams.

I know. It’s tough to know where to begin (again) in chasing purpose. Yes, it can be overwhelming to think of ALL that must be done to get there.

But this we know: if we do nothing, nothing changes for the better. Oh, yes, it will usually change – but for the worse.

Staying stuck in the failing familiar of old comfort zones is NOT the solution. Ever!
